Seasonally Adjusted Data
In the week ending October 11, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 306,000, an increase of 2,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 304,000. The 4-week moving average was 306,250, a decrease of 500 from the previous week's unrevised average of 306,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending October 4, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending October 4 was 2,278,000, an increase of 22,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,256,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,237,500, an increase of 5,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,231,750.
Unadjusted Data
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 285,135 in the week ending October 11, an increase of 25,715 from the previous week. There were 306,524 initial claims in the comparable week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during the week ending October 4, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,802,013, a decrease of 5,174 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 1,969,531.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending September 27.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 4,412 in the week ending October 4, an increase of 2,779 from the prior week. There were 2,295 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 624 from the preceding week.
There were 23,293 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending September 27, an increase of 1,393 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,448, a decrease of 19 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending September 27 were in Puerto Rico (6.1 percent), Alaska (3.2), California (2.6), Hawaii (2.5), Pennsylvania ( 2.2), Washington (2.2), Arkansas (2.1), New Jersey (2.1), Rhode Island (2.1), the District of Columbia (2.0), Oregon (2.0), and the Virgin Islands (2.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending October 4 were in California (+3,401), Oregon (+1,740), Pennsylvania (+1,717), Michigan (+1,658), and Alabama (+1,634), while the largest decreases were in Missouri (—845), Louisiana (—443), Kansas (—345), Arkansas (—254), and New Mexico (—141).
