PERMITS IN SEPTEMBER 1997
Privately Owned Housing Starts
Privately owned housing starts in September were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,500,000, according to estimates reported today by the U.S. Commerce Department's Bureau of the Census. This is the 8 (+/—6) percent above the revised August rate of 1,390,000 and 2 (+/—6) percent above the September 1996 rate of 1,470,000.
Single-family housing starts in September 1997 were at a rate of 1,170,000; this is 7 (+/—5) percent above the August figure of 1,094,000. The September rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 291,000. The September rate for units in buildings with two to four units was 39,000.
During the first 9 months of this year, 1,116,000 housing units were started compared with 1,141,400 units for the same period in 1996. This is a decrease of 2 (+/—1) percent.
Building Permits
The seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing units authorized by building permits in September was 1,445,000; this is 3 (+/—1) percent above the revised August rate of 1,397,000 and 4 (+/—1) percent above the September 1996 estimate of 1,391,000.
Single-family authorizations in September 1997 were at a rate of 1,058,000; this is 3 (+/—1) percent above the August figure of 1,027,000. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 314,000 in September. The September rate of permit-authorized units in buildings with two to four units was 73,000.
During the first 9 months of this year, 1,095,100 housing units were authorized by building permits compared with 1,102,000 units for the same period in 1996. This is a decrease of 1 (+/—1) percent.
Mobile Home Shipments
Statistics on mobile home shipments, which lag by 1 month, appear in the Current Construction Reports, series C20. In August, manufacturers' shipments of mobile homes were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 357,000, virtually the same as the July figure of 358,000. The August 1996 rate was 369,000. Before seasonal adjustment, total shipments in August 1997 were 31,400.
