(October 10, 1997) LIVE CATTLE: Improving cash news helped support futures today. Cutout values were mixed at noon with a firm bias. Show lists were cleaned up for the week as the USDA reported cattle slaughter for the week up 4.5% and beef production up 8.1% from the same period a year ago. Dressed weights are 23# heavier than last year. Futures were choppy this week but closed only .27 higher than last Friday. On Tuesday the December contract tested the contract lows and by Friday posted new highs for the week. Higher feed prices pressured feeder cattle however any downward correction in corn prices could give the cattle complex the news it needs to breakthrough trendline resistance.
