Seasonally Adjusted Data
In the week ending Oct. 4, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 304,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 309,000. The 4-week moving average was 306,750, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of 308,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Sept. 27, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 27 was 2,234,000 an increase of 19,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,215,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,226,250, a decrease of 27,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,253,750.
Unadjusted Data
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 259,028 in the week ending Oct. 4, an increase of 22,102 from the previous week. There were 292,053 initial claims in the comparable week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during the week ending Sept. 27, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,789,051, a decrease of 33,847 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 1,997,864.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending Sept. 20.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,632 in the week ending Sept. 27, a decrease of 291 from the prior week. There were 1,671 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 7 from the preceding week.
There were 21,900 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 20, a decrease of 1,291 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,465, a decrease of 246 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 20 were in Puerto Rico (6.0 percent), Alaska (3.2), Rhode Island (2.6), California (2.5), Hawaii (2.5), Washington (2.3), Arkansas (2.2), New Jersey (2.2), Oregon (2.2), and Pennsylvania (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 27 were in California (2,478), Kentucky (+1,640), Wisconsin (+589), Kansas (+465), and Mississippi (+424), while the largest decreases were in Texas (—2,730), Tennessee (—1,455), Virginia (—1,401), Oregon (—1,173), and South Carolina (—853).
