Seasonally Adjusted Data

In the week ending October 25, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 297,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 313,000. The 4-week moving average was 305,250, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 308,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending October 18, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending October 18 was 2,201,000, a decrease of 48,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,249,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,238,500, a decrease of 3,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,242,000.

Unadjusted Data

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 273,153 in the week ending October 25, an increase of 16,403 from the previous week. There were 311,976 initial claims in the comparable week in 1996.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending October 18, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,853,216, an increase of 71,821 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,039,597.

Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending October 11.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,120 in the week ending October 18, a decrease of 846 from the prior week. There were 1,445 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 308 from the preceding week.

There were 25,980 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending October 11, an increase of 3,171 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,751, a decrease of 639 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending October 11 were in Puerto Rico (5.9 percent), Alaska (3.4), California (2.5), Hawaii (2.5), Rhode Island (2.4), Arkansas (2.3), Washington (2.3), Oregon (2.2), New Jersey (2.1), and Pennsylvania (2.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending October 18 were in Ohio (+2,988), Alabama (+374), Wisconsin (+331), Nevada (+140), and Maine (+90), while the largest decreases were in California (—4,308), New York (—4,054), Pennsylvania (—2,815), Texas (—2,567), and Puerto Rico (—1,926).
