Seasonally Adjusted Data
In the week ending September 27, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 308,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 307,000. The 4-week moving average was 308,750, a decrease of 4,250 from the previous week's revised average of 313,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending September 20, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending September 20 was 2,228,000 an increase of 25,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,203,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,257,500, a decrease of 19,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,277,250.
Unadjusted Data
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 236,368 in the week ending September 27, a decrease of 10,246 from the previous week. There were 261,256 initial claims in the comparable week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending September 20, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,833,536, a decrease of 23,869 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,017,274.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending September 13.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,922 in the week ending September 20, a decrease of 97 from the prior week. There were 1,667 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 178 from the preceding week.
There were 23,194 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending September 13, an increase of 1,233 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,702, an increase of 524 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending September 13 were in Puerto Rico (5.9 percent), Alaska (3.1), Hawaii (2.7), California (2.6), Rhode Island (2.6), Arkansas (2.3), New Jersey (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.3), Washington (2.3), and the District of Columbia (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending September 20 were in Texas (+2,696), California (+2,151), Oregon (+1,882), Missouri (+1,618), and Virginia (+745), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (—2,920), South Carolina (—2,893), New York (—1,921), Michigan (—1,900), and Kentucky (—1,204).
