Seasonally Adjusted Data
In the week ending Oct. 18, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 315,000, an increase of 8,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 307,000. The 4-week moving average was 308,750, an increase of 2,250 from the previous week's revised average of 306,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Oct. 11, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 11 was 2,261,000, an increase of 15,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,246,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,245,000, an increase of 15,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,230,000.
Unadjusted Data
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 258,518 in the week ending Oct. 18, a decrease of 27,688 from the previous week. There were 271,942 initial claims in the comparable week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during the week ending Oct. 11, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,790,872, an increase of 14,627 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 1,966,841.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending Oct. 4.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,961 in the week ending Oct. 11, a decrease of 1,455 from the prior week. There were 1,750 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 547 from the preceding week.
There were 22,805 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 4, a decrease of 493 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,387, a decrease of 63 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 4 were in Puerto Rico (5.9 percent), Alaska (3.3), California (2.5), Rhode Island (2.5), Hawaii ( 2.4), Arkansas (2.3), Washington (2.2), New Jersey (2.1), Oregon (2.1), and Pennsylvania (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 11 were in Texas (+3,825), New York (+3,026), Washington (+2,847), Pennsylvania (+2,286), and Puerto Rico (+1,903), while the largest decreases were in Alabama (—925), Illinois (—770), Kentucky (—767), Nebraska (—200), and Massachusetts (—141).
