There were 12,750 bales from the 1996 crop which ginners estimated would be ginned after the March survey, compared to 500 last year, and 8,600 in 1994. The number of active cotton gins for crop year 1996 is 1,213, compared to 1,274 in 1995, and 1,306 for the 1994 crop year.
Bureau Of The Census Cotton Information
Cotton consumed during the month ending February 28, 1997, amounted to 823,084 bales. Cotton on hand in consuming establishments at the end of February was 667,691 bales, and the total in public storage and in compresses was 9,097,167 bales. Active consuming cotton spindles totaled 2,572,000, and the quantity of domestic cotton exported, excluding linters, was 652,300 bales.
