MANUFACTURING AND TRADE INVENTORIES AND SALES SUMMARY

Sales
The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that the combined value of distributive trade sales and manufacturers' shipments for July adjusted for seasonal and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were estimated at $757.6 billion, up 1.0 percent (+/—0.2%) from June and 5.1 percent (+/—0.4%) above July 1996. Total durable goods increased 1.6 percent (+/—0.3%) from June and were 7.6 percent (+/—0.8%) above July 1996. Total nondurable goods increased 0.4 percent (+/—0.2%) from June and were up 2.7 percent (+/—0.6%) from July 1996.
Inventories
Manufacturers' and trade inventories, adjusted for seasonal variations, but not for price changes, were estimated at an end-of-month level of $1,028.1 billion, up 0.2 percent (+/—0.5%) from June and 3.2 percent (+/—0.8%) above July 1996. Total durable goods increased 0.2 percent (+/—0.2%) from June and were up 4.1 percent (+/—1.1%) from July 1996. Total nondurable goods increased 0.1 percent (+/—0.3%) from June and were up 1.8 percent (+/—0.6%) from July 1996.
Inventories/Sales Ratio
The total business inventories/sales ratio based on seasonally adjusted data at the end of July was 1.36, down .01 (+/—.01%) from June and down .02 (+/—.03%) from July 1996.
