Seasonally Adjusted Data
In the week ending December 6, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 311,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 324,000. The 4-week moving average was 318,250, a decrease of 500 from the previous week's revised average of 318,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending November 29, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending November 29 was 2,273,000, a decrease of 20,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,293,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,248,500, an increase of 11,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,237,500.
Unadjusted Data
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 398,487 in the week ending December 6, an increase of 86,978 from the previous week. There were 444,272 initial claims in the comparable week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during the week ending November 29, an increase of 0.4 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,334,881, an increase of 429,477 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,612,399.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending November 22.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,948 in the week ending November 29, a decrease of 151 from the prior week. There were 1,138 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 351 from the preceding week.
There were 24,920 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending November 22, a decrease of 1,557 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,643, a decrease of 2,650 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending November 22 were in Alaska (4.7 percent), Puerto Rico (4.4), Washington (2.9), Rhode Island (2.8), California (2.7), Oregon (2.6), Hawaii (2.3), Nebraska (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.3), Idaho (2.2), and Vermont (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending November 29 were in Wisconsin (+6,786), Ohio (+2,991), Nebraska (+2,581), Texas (+1,942), and Oklahoma (+1,298), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (—4,476), Illinois (—4,292), North Carolina (—3,872), Pennsylvania (—3,705), and New Jersey (—2,920).
