(December 5, 1997) HOGS: found a mixed cash picture as many stations reported steady to better and Midwest direct found steady to 1.00 lower. USDA weekend demand for Saturday slaughter is 83,000 which was within analysts expectations of 75,000 and 85,000. Better cutouts were helped by strong hams again. Weather has given some icy roads to MN, IA, and the rest of the Midwest but hasn't hindered movement. USDA estesimated slaughter strong at 376,000 versus last year's 361,000. # 2 cutouts rose .56. Latest CME Lean Index is down .67 to 63.55 and live equivalent comes to 47.03. February and April rose on better cutouts while bellies were mixed.
