INVENTORIES AND ORDERS

OCTOBER 1997

New orders for manufactured goods in October increased $1.0 billion or 0.3 percent to $337.2 billion, the Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census reported today. This follows a 0.4 percent September increase and is the fifth consecutive monthly increase. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 0.6 percent, the first decrease since May. Year to date, new orders are 5.1 percent above the same period a year ago.

Shipments decreased $0.2 billion or 0.1 percent to $335.2 billion, following a 1.6 percent September increase. This is the second decrease in the last three months and the fourth this year. Year to date, shipments are 5.8 percent above the same period a year ago.

Unfilled orders, up five of the last six months, increased $2.1 billion or 0.4 percent to $530.0 billion, following a 0.2 percent September increase. The unfilled orders-to-shipments ratio was 2.81, up from 2.78 in September.

Inventories, up fifteen of the last sixteen months, increased $2.0 billion or 0.4 percent to $451.1 billion, following a 0.2 percent September increase. The inventories-to-shipments ratio was 1.35, up from 1.34 in September.
