SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
Housing Units Completed In October 1997
At An Annual Rate Of 1,391,000
Privately owned housing completions in October were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,391,000, according to estimates released jointly today by the U.S. Commerce Department's Bureau of the Census and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is 3 (+/—7) percent below the revised September rate of 1,431,000, but 1 (+/—7) percent above the October 1996 estimate of 1,375,000.
The October 1997 rate of single-family housing completions was 1,056,000; this is 7 (+/—7) percent below the revised September rate of 1,141,000. The October rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 290,000. The October rate for units in buildings with two to four units was 45,000.
During the first 10 months of this year 1,142,900 housing units were completed compared with 1,148,300 units for the same period in 1996. This is a decrease of less than 1 (+/—2) percent.
At the end of October, the seasonally adjusted estimate of housing units under construction was 853,000; this is 1(+/—1) percent above the revised September figure of 843,000. Of these, 578,000 units were single-family structures, 248,000 were in buildings with five units or more, and 27,000 were in buildings with two to four units.
