OCTOBER 1997 CONSTRUCTION

AT $605.5 BILLION ANNUAL RATE

Construction put in place during October 1997 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $605.5 billion, nearly the same (+/— 5 percent) as the revised September estimate of $604.8 billion, according to the U.S. Commerce Department's Bureau of the Census. The October figure represents a 4 (+/— 5) percent increase over October 1996.

During the first 10 months of this year $500.9 billion of construction was put in place, 6 percent above the $474.0 billion for the same period in 1996.

In constant (1992) dollars, the October annual rate was $509.2 billion, nearly the same (+/— 5 percent) as the revised estimate of $509.1 billion for September.

Private Construction

Spending on new residential housing units was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $189.8 billion in October, 2 (+/—2) percent above the revised September estimate of $186.6 billion. Nonresidential building construction was at a rate of $160.7 billion, 1 (+/— 3) percent below the revised September estimate of $162.6 billion.

Public Construction

In October, the estimated seasonally adjusted annual rate of public construction put in place was $139.1 billion, 1 (+/— 5) percent above the revised September estimate of $138.3 billion.
