Seasonally Adjusted Data

In the week ending Nov. 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 303,000, a decrease of 31,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 334,000. The 4-week moving average was 316,500, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of 315,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Nov. 15, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 15 was 2,189,000, a decrease of 31,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,220,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,219,500, an increase of 1,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,218,500.

Unadjusted Data

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 341,503 in the week ending Nov. 22, an increase of 29,822 from the previous week. There were 383,546 initial claims in the comparable week in 1996.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending Nov. 15, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,022,962, an increase of 171,665 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,220,823.

Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending Nov. 8.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,291 in the week ending Nov. 15, an increase of 106 from the prior week. There were 1,403 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 270 from the preceding week.

There were 26,964 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 8, an increase of 1,558 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,430, a decrease of 627 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 8 were in Alaska (4.5 percent), Puerto Rico (3.2), California (2.7), Washington (2.7), Oregon (2.5), Pennsylvania (2.5), Hawaii (2.4), Arkansas (2.3), New Jersey (2.1), New York (2.0), and Vermont (2.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 15 were in Colorado (+1,839), New Jersey (+1,420), Arkansas (+1,345), Minnesota (+1,187), and Alabama (+807), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (—2,560), Washington (—2,255), Illinois (—1,820), Puerto Rico (—1,514), and Michigan (—1,131).
