U.S. COLD STORAGE STOCKS

Frozen food stocks in refrigerated warehouses on October 31, 1997, were greater than year earlier levels for concentrated orange juice, meat, turkey, potatoes, and fruit. Cooler stocks of pears and peanuts were higher than a year earlier.

Total red meat supplies in freezers increased 2 percent from September and were up 14 percent from October 1996. Frozen pork stocks were 4 percent above last month and were up 8 percent from last year. Stocks of pork bellies were up 29 percent from last month, but were 11 percent below a year ago.

Total frozen poultry supplies decreased 1 percent from last month, but were 6 percent above last year. Total stocks of chicken increased 4 percent during the month, but were 1 percent below 1996. Total pounds of turkey in freezers decreased 4 percent from last month, but were up 12 percent from last year's level.

Public cooler occupancy was at 50 percent of capacity, up 5 points from a year ago. Public freezer occupancy at 70 percent was the same as last month and 3 points above the year earlier level.
