Seasonally Adjusted Data
In the week ending Nov. 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 333,000, an increase of 20,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 313,000. The 4-week moving average was 315,250, an increase of 5,250 from the previous week's revised average of 310,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Nov. 8, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 8 was 2,263,000, an increase of 31,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,232,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,230,000, an increase of 3,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,227,000.
Unadjusted Data
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 311,131 in the week ending Nov. 15, a decrease of 11,494 from the previous week. There were 330,730 initial claims in the comparable week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending Nov. 8, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,887,127, an increase of 8,084 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,111,015.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending Nov. 1.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,185 in the week ending Nov. 8, a decrease of 49 from the prior week. There were 1,673 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 246 from the preceding week.
There were 25,407 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 1, a decrease of 1,622 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,062, a decrease of 67 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 1 were in Puerto Rico (6.3 percent), Alaska (4.2), California (2.7), Washington (2.6), Rhode Island (2.5), Hawaii (2.4), Oregon (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.4), Arkansas (2.3), and New Jersey (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 8 were in California (+8,580), Illinois (+2,844), Michigan (+2,313), Pennsylvania (+1,633), and New York (+1,586), while the largest decreases were in Colorado (—1,243), New Jersey (—490), Ohio (—489), Arkansas (—432), and Nebraska (—381).
