Seasonally Adjusted Data
In the week ending Nov. 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 310,000, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 316,000. The 4-week moving average was 309,250, an increase of 750 from the previous week's revised average of 308,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Nov. 1, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 1 was 2,246,000, an increase of 5,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,241,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,230,750, unchanged from the preceding week's revised average of 2,230,750.
Unadjusted Data
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 319,645 in the week ending Nov. 8, an increase of 26,759 from the previous week. There were 340,255 initial claims in the comparable week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending Nov. 1, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,890,750, an increase of 44,572 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,084,096.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending Oct. 25.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,234 in the week ending Nov. 1, an increase of 315 from the prior week. There were 1,427 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 203 from the preceding week.
There were 27,072 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 25, an increase of 1,694 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,153, a decrease of 16 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 25 were in Puerto Rico (5.5 percent), Alaska (4.0), California (2.7), Rhode Island (2.5), Hawaii (2.4), Washington (2.4), New Jersey (2.2), Oregon (2.2), Pennsylvania (2.2), and Arkansas (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 1 were in Ohio (+3,546), California (+2,512), North Carolina (+1,924), Pennsylvania (+1,460), and Michigan (+1,363), while the largest decreases were in Nevada (—756), Oklahoma (—700), Florida (—667), Illinois (—616), and Idaho (—573).
