Cotton consumed during the month ending September 30, 1997, amounted to 1,101,672 bales. Cotton on hand in consuming establishments at the end of September was 610,259 bales, and the total in public storage and in compresses was 1,999,699 bales. Active consuming cotton spindles totaled 2,639,000, and the quantity of domestic cotton exported, excluding linters was 276,300 bales.
