Seasonally Adjusted Data
In the week ending November 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 315,000, an increase of 16,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 299,000. The 4-week moving average was 308,250, an increase of 2,750 from the previous week's revised average of 305,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending October 25, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending October 25 was 2,254,000, an increase of 64,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,190,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,235,250, a decrease of 1,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,236,250.
Unadjusted Data
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 291,491 in the week ending November 1, an increase of 16,348 from the previous week. There were 320,831 initial claims in the comparable week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending October 25, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,857,058, an increase of 13,095 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,063,022.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending October 18.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,919 in the week ending October 25, a decrease of 172 from the prior week. There were 1,630 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 171 from the preceding week.
There were 25,402 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending October 18, a decrease of 583 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,212, an increase of 434 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending October 18 were in Puerto Rico (6.1 percent), Alaska (3.9), California (2.7), Rhode Island (2.6), Hawaii (2.4), Washington (2.3), Oregon (2.2), Pennsylvania (2.2), Arkansas (2.1), and New Jersey (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending October 25 were in New York (+3,559), Illinois (+2,269), California (+2,030), Pennsylvania (+1,813), and New Jersey (+1,511), while the largest decreases were in Ohio (—2,445), Alabama (—822), Tennessee (—541), South Carolina (—366), and Texas (—227).
