Corn Stocks Up 45 Percent

Corn stocks in all positions on June 1, 1997, totaled 2.49 billion bushels, 45 percent above a year earlier. Of the total stocks, 1.50 billion bushels are stored on farms, 92 percent above last June. Off-farm stocks, at 994 million bushels, are up 6 percent from last year.

The March-May indicated disappearance is 2.00 billion bushels, 4 percent below the disappearance of 2.08 billion bushels during the same period a year ago.

Old-crop all wheat stored in all positions June 1, 1997 totaled 444 million bushels, up 18 percent from June 1, 1996. On-farm storages held 155 million bushels more than double those of a year ago, but stocks off farms are down 4 percent to 290 million bushels. All wheat disappearance for the fourth quarter is 378 million bushels, down 16 percent from the same period in 1996.

Soybeans stored in all positions on June 1, 1997, totaled 499 million bushels, down 20 percent from June 1, 1996. On-farm stocks, estimated at 216 million bushels, were down 8 percent from the same period last year and accounted for 43 percent of total stocks. Off-farm stocks at 283 million bushels, were down 27 percent from last year.

Indicated disappearance during the March-May 1997 quarter totaled 556 million bushels, down 2 percent from the same period one year ago.

Old-crop barley stored in all positions on June 1, 1997, totaled 110 million bushels, 10 percent above stocks of June 1, 1996. Of the total barley stocks on hand, 43.7 million bushels were stored on farms, 71 percent above a year ago. However, June 1, 1997 off-farm stocks were 10 percent below last year at 66.2 million bushels. Indicated disappearance during the March-May quarter totaled 63.0 million bushels, 20 percent below the same period a year earlier.

Old- crop oats stored in all positions on June 1, 1997 totaled 66.6 million bushels, fractionally above the stocks of June 1, 1996. Of the total stocks on hand, 33.1 million bushels were stored on farms, 2 percent above last year. Off-farm stocks totaled 33.5 million bushels, slightly below a year ago. The indicated March-May disappearance from all positions is 29.0 million bushels, down 37% from the disappearance in 1996.

Old-crop durum stocks in all positions June 1, 1997 totaled 31.6 million bushels, up 23 percent from last June. Farm stocks are 17.8 million bushels, up 43 percent from last year. The fourth quarter disappearance of 23.4 million bushels is 2 percent more than March-May 1996.

Grain sorghum stored in all positions totaled 117 million bushels, up 67 percent from June 1, 1996. Of the total sorghum stocks on hand, 38.8 million bushels were on farms, 178 percent above a year earlier. Off-farm stocks, at 78.6 million bushels, were 39 percent above the previous year. Disappearance for the March-May quarter is 157 million bushels, up 70 percent from the same period last year.
