Seasonally Adjusted Data

In the week ending June 7, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 339,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 338,000. The 4-week moving average was 329,250, an increase of 5,250 from the previous week's revised average of 324,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending May 31, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 31 was 2,306,000, an increase of 30,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,276,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,267,250, an increase of 4,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,262,750.

Unadjusted Data

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 309,873 in the week ending June 7, an increase of 61,773 from the previous week. There were 329,099 initial claims in the comparable week in 1996.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during the week ending May 31, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,123,644, an increase of 109,337 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,345,998.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending May 24.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,783 in the week ending May 31, an increase of 194 from the prior week. There were 1,354 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 305 from the preceding week.

There were 17,850 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 24, an increase of 338 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,935, a decrease of 934 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 24 were in Puerto Rico (5.4 percent), Alaska (4.4), Rhode Island (3.1), Hawaii (3.1), Washington (2.7), California (2.6), Oregon (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.6), Maine (2.4), New Jersey (2.4), and Vermont (2.4).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 31 were in Kentucky (+917), Ohio (+822), Oregon (+567), Iowa (+458), and Texas (+358), while the largest decreases were in California (-5,139), Georgia (-1,718), New York (-1,691), Virginia (-1,268), and Florida (-1,239).
