INVENTORIES AND SALES SUMMARY
APRIL 1997
Intention To Revise
Revisions to the unadjusted and adjusted monthly estimates of manufacturing shipments and inventories are scheduled to be released June 18. Manufacturing data will be revised from January 1987 through April 1997. We are also changing the sample base and the sample design for the survey that produces the preliminary and final monthly retail estimates. The seasonally adjusted March and April 1997 retail estimates along with the April 1996 estimates will be revised the week of June 23. The not seasonally adjusted April 1997 estimates will also be revised. The revisions for total business inventories and sales will be reflected in the May Manufacturing and Trade Inventories and Sales Report.
Sales
The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that
the combined value of distributive trade sales and manufacturers' shipments
for April adjusted for seasonal and trading-day differences, but not for
price changes, were estimated at $746.3 billion, 0.3 percent (+/-0.4%)
above March and 5.1 percent (+/-0.4%) above April 1996. Total durable goods
increased 0.7 percent (+/-1.3%) from March and were up 6.7 percent (+/-0.8%)
from April 1996. Total nondurable goods decreased 0.2 percent (+/- 1.3%)
from March but were up 3.5 percent (+/-0.6%) from April 1996. Inventories
Manufacturers' and trade inventories, adjusted for seasonal variations, but not for price changes, were estimated at an end-of- month level of $1,021.2 billion, 0.3 percent (+/-0.1%) above March and 2.4 percent (+/-0.7%) above April 1996. Total durable goods increased 0.7 percent (+/-0.2%) from March and were up 3.4 percent (+/-1.1%) from April 1996. Total nondurable goods decreased 0.1 percent (+/-0.1%) from March but were up 0.7 percent (+/-0.5%) from April 1996.
Inventories/Sales Ratio
The total business inventories/sales ratio based on seasonally adjusted data at the end of April was 1.37, virtually unchanged from March, but down .03 from April 1996.
