Red Meat, Beef, And Pork Production Set Record Highs For November
Veal Production Sets Record Low(December 22, 2000) Commercial red meat production for the United States totaled 3.92 billion pounds in November, up 1 percent from the previous record high for November of 3.89 billion pounds produced in 1999.
November 1999 contained 22 weekdays (including two holidays) and 4 Saturdays. November 2000 contained 22 weekdays (including one holiday) and 4 Saturdays (including one holiday).
Beef production, at 2.17 billion pounds, was 1 percent above the previous record high for November set last year. Cattle slaughter totaled 2.93 million head, down slightly from 1999. The average live weight was up 14 pounds from the previous year, at 1,230 pounds.
Veal production totaled 18 million pounds, 3 percent below the previous record low for November set a year ago. Calf slaughter totaled 92 thousand head, down 11 percent from November 1999. The average live weight was 22 pounds above last year, at 321 pounds.
Pork production totaled 1.71 billion pounds, up slightly from the previous record high set last year. Hog kill totaled 8.76 million head, 2 percent below 1999. The average live weight was 3 pounds above the previous year, at 265 pounds.
Lamb and mutton production, at 20 million pounds, was down 6 percent from November 1999. Sheep slaughter totaled 296 thousand head, 10 percent below last year. The average live weight was 138 pounds, up 6 pounds from November a year ago.
January-November red meat production was 42.5 billion pounds, 1 percent higher than the comparable figure a year earlier. Accumulated beef production was 2 percent higher than last year, veal was down 3 percent, pork was down 1 percent, and lamb & mutton was down 4 percent.
